The new tax season for Tax Year 2021 will officially open on January 24 and the deadline for filing your 2021 U.S. tax return is April 18, 2022.
Please click here to read a New York Times article to see how bad the backlog situation is at IRS (Internal Revenue Service – the U.S. tax department) right now. They still have 10 million paper tax returns to process from 2020 and prior years (please refer also to the two photos accompanying this post – they show the actual IRS holding room). This article should explain why many of you are still waiting for the Stimulus Payment (all or part of it) or the tax refund.
It is suggested that you file your 2021 tax return as soon as possible. On this year’s return, the third Stimulus Payment ($1400 per person) can be claimed for those who still have not received it. Those who are still waiting for the first two Stimulus Payments ($1200 and $600 respectively) and who have already filed their 2019 and/or 2020 tax returns, will still receive them in due time when their tax return is processed.
Please use the IRS2Go app to check your refund status but don’t expect anything anytime soon. Months may pass before you receive anything, judging by how slowly the IRS is tackling the backlog. COVID-19 mail delivery-related delays are not helping matters, so please be (very) patient.
As a last resort, you can call the IRS on 001-267-941-1000 to see what’s holding up your payment. They are open from 7am to 7pm U.S. Eastern Time (1pm to 1am Central European Time). The best time to call is as soon as they open and about 30 minutes before they close. Otherwise expect long delays before you speak to a live person.
