Today, many people received a $1400 check in the mail dated March 26 2021 (03 26 21 is the date on the check). If you are one of those who recently filed your 2020 U.S. tax return and requested that the refund to be sent either to your Wise app or directly deposited in your U.S. bank account, PLEASE DO NOT CASH THE CHECK, or you will end up having an overpayment with the IRS, which you will have to pay back.

Here is what to do:

1) Keep the check until all the money due you arrives in Wise or in your U.S. bank account. Once it does, please destroy the check. The check is valid for one year.

If the IRS sends you a letter stating that your refund amount has been adjusted to zero, due to the fact that they sent you a check instead of a Direct Deposit, then you can go ahead and cash the check. BUT, UNTIL YOU RECEIVE A LETTER FROM THE IRS, PLEASE DO NOT CASH ANY CHECKS.

2) You can check your refund status here:

https://www.irs.gov/refunds

Or you can download the IRS app: IRS2Go

3) The same applies to the $600 check many people received recently, dated 01 06 21 (Jan 06 2021)

4) You should receive all of the following Stimulus payments:

STIMULUS PAYMENT 1 – approved in March 2020: $1,200 (children = $500) per person

STIMULUS PAYMENT 2 – approved in January 2021: $ 600 (children = $600) per person

STIMULUS PAYMENT 3 – approved in March 2021: $1,400 (children = $1,400) per person

5) For those who still HAVE NOT filed, please read below:

THE EXTENDED 2020 TAX YEAR E-FILING DEADLINE IS MAY 17. IF YOU MISS THE DEADLINE, YOU WILL HAVE TO MAIL YOUR TAX RETURN AND YOU WILL STILL BE ELIGIBLE TO RECEIVE ALL 3 STIMULUS PAYMENTS. HOWEVER, PROCESSING WILL TAKE MUCH LONGER, PROBABLY ABOUT 6 MONTHS OR SO.

PLEASE KEEP IN MIND THAT THE NORMAL U.S. TAX RETURN FILING DEADLINE IS APRIL 15 EACH YEAR. SO PLEASE, FOR NEXT YEAR, MAKE SURE TO HAVE THE REQUIRED DOCUMENTS READY FOR PROCESSING BY NOT LATER THAN MID-MARCH 2022.

+++++++++++  UPDATED July 02, 2021 +++++++++++

Further to the previous post, it is now OK to cash any checks received from the IRS. The IRS will be sending a letter explaining that they have either reduced the tax refund amount due or that there is no refund due since they sent it via mail by means of a paper check. Please make a photocopy of any checks you cash and keep them for your records.

Several people still have not received their tax refund. The refund status may be checked by downloading the IRS2go app, entering the SSN (Social Security Number), Filing Status (Single/Married/Head of Household) and the Refund amount.

If you have not received your refund, please allow a few more weeks before calling the IRS on +001 267 941 1000. They had an exceptionally heavy workload to process this year due to the Stimulus Payments given as well as the COVID-19 situation.
